Afro-Mexican Experience
Digital Illustration
Symbol Design
Visual StorytellingMany key events and figures in Afro-Mexican history are often overlooked or misunderstood. This project explores the rich culture and history of Afro-Mexicans, their connection to the African Diaspora, and the ways Afro-Mexican communities have shaped Mexico’s cultural landscape.
Although Afro-Mexicans represent a small percentage of Mexico’s population, they are among Latin America’s largest groups of African descent. Many enslaved Africans brought to Mexico married primarily Indigenous peoples, creating a sizable mestizo population. Over generations, Mexico’s history, art, and contemporary culture have been deeply influenced by these African roots.
This project translates Afro-Mexican heritage into visual form through symbolic imagery. Each symbol represents a meaningful aspect of Afro-Mexican culture, highlighting the blending of African and Mexican ancestry to form a unique identity. I traced these images from cultural studies and applied diverse hand-drawn brush techniques in Adobe Illustrator. By combining thin and thick strokes and varying stroke weights, I emphasized contrast and depth, bringing these cultural symbols to life while honoring their historical significance.

ABOUT ME
As a recent UIC graduate, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for analog art, working with traditional media such as painting, drawing, collage, linocuts, and creating objects with clay, and translating these pieces into the digital realm to create a dynamic bridge between physical and digital art. My work often explores personal themes that shape who I am—my Black and Mexican heritage, my environment, my thoughts, family and friends, and my evolving identity as an artist and designer.
Lately, I’ve been drawn to brand identity and logo design, exploring how visual systems can communicate ideas and values effectively. As I continue learning and discovering more about myself, I know I’ll also develop clarity about the kind of designer I want to be through these projects. Outside of my work, I enjoy exploring local spots with friends, shooting film, learning Spanish, and being a homebody with my cat.
